Chapter 1: Worst day at the office...ever!
Darkness...Calm...rest.......relaxing calmness...................... * thud* . ...........calm............*thud*..........calm........*thud*....*thud*...*thud*..*thud*.*thud**THUD*! The girl awoke in a groggy haze. Vision blurred, her body leapt and she tensed while pushing herself to her knees, breath held and terrorified. She remained frozen trying to recollect the events that brought her here...her mind unable to focus and her thoughts were little more than incoherent jumbles. Running through grass and street alike... yes, through neighborhoods. Running from...from-THUD! The girl emitted a barely audible, choked scream, "HUUUUUU..cough!cough!" Her startled cry was interrupted by a sore, dry throat and she winced, finally swallowing a miniscule fraction of saliva. *THUD* That sound again! Alarmed further, her instincts finally took over and her complete focus shifted to her surroundings. Dark...barely able to see the outline of her own arms and hands as they held her up on the cool, wooden, floor beams. "Kind of small bedroom," she noticed as she placed a hand on the bed and hoisted herself to her feet. Slight dizziness...balance is a bit off. *THUD* She spun around hastily as if the sound came from right behind her. Alas, nothing moved in the even darker hallway past the open door. Very still...very quiet..."very frozen, again," the girl thought. *gggrruuhhhhh* "OK. Stop fucking thinking RIGHT THIS FUCKING INSTANT!" She exclaimed inwardly in her own mind. "Action time". She tip-toed as softly as she could to the door and slowly closed it. Even darker now she thought as she had to squint to barely make trace of her hand as it slowly and quitely untwisted the doorknob, letting the lock engage. "gggrrrrooaaannn". Just as loud even with the door now shut. She turned 180 degrees scanning over what appeared to be a dresser and closet entrance on the sidewall and fixed her gaze on the open window across the room. "The source of the decreasing light," she thought as the sun sank under the tree-littered horizon...
*** That's when it all came flooding back. Her father...he.. he just bolted in the door of his law practice located just off the strip. The girl had just come..from...frrrommmm her...friend's house? Yes..after school they would meet regularly...Hellen... Father was coming back to pick her up from his business dinner down at the diner. The door flung wide and bounced off the back-stop. "COME WITH ME NOW!" He barked, the most wild and fearful face the man had ever worn by far. Alarmed by her father's words, the girl began to quickly put her school notebook into her backpack whe-"GOD DAMMIT! I SAID GO!" He screamed again, this time latching onto her arm and yanking the juvenile straight off her feet in a sudden lurch. Full panic overtook her as she was dragged straight out the door...and there it was...like in slow motion, now...the girl's eyes fixated fifteen or so yards away...on it. Father stopped dead in his tracks, too as the spectacle emerged from a backyard treeline. The...thinggg..the thing gave pause in its movement as it tilted its head up to make view of the man and girl. Her jaw dropped as she whispered, "D-Dad..dy" tears brimming from her eyes as an uncontrollable fear welled up deep inside her. The thing made a garbled sound and opened its mouth wide; blood slowly oozing from the open maw. The silver-haired male reached for a metal rake propped against the law firm's brick wall and gripped it with both hands before stepping infront of his daughter. "Princess, daddy needs you to get back inside his office and lock the door behind you." She began to protest her father's commands but was interrupted by the thing as it shambled hurriedly towards their direction across the grass lawn. Father opened the door before we could even move and threw us...errr...you in and then disappearing, slamming it it quickly shut behind him....why did he stay? Why didn't he come with.. us? Princess surveyed for a window and found one, next to the secretary's desk. As she hurried over to the glass she heard her father's frantic commands, "Take another step and I will end you, ya hear?" The thing was almost on her father before its attention locked onto us through the glass, Princess. "God Dammit, P!" Dad shouted as he wound back the rake in both hands and swung it at the creature's cranium with all his might. *THWACK* a sickening sound the rake made as its pointy, metallic spikes made contact with the soft side of its head. The creature's top spun with the force of the blow and the rest of its body followed suit before flopping lifelessly to the ground as it let out a gut-wrenching roar, silenced by the gurgling of blood-filled lungs. Father walked promptly to the corpse
and attempted to part the rake that was now embedded and stuck in the hapless pile of flesh that lie dead on the well-groomed grass. "Daddy!.." you cried, half alarmed yet simultaneously relieved as immediate danger was seemingly jettisoned. "P, on second thought we're leaving!" he declared as he looked for her face in the window, one foot on the creature in hopes to help dislodge the rake with his weight. "P, grab the keys to our car and then come out here, now!" He ordered again. Without hesitation we ran into his back office and grabbed his keys lying in front of the monitor on his desk, right where they always are. "Coming," you yelled from the back as you made your way to the door leading out. "When we opened the door it hit like stack of bricks, no?" One asked the other. "Why didn't he stay inside with us? Why would he put himself in danger? Why? WhY? WHYYYYYY?" The girl asked.***
"Pitiful human," the other murmured. "Don't you dare... don't YOU FUCKING DARE! WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?" the girl asked unknowingly outloud to the quiet bedroom. No response. She waited and waited. Nothing. Alone. What was I...? *THUD* A little collected, the girl headed to the window and peered down to ground level through it. Something is down there...so dark. The lawn lights flickered on via light sensors and bathed the yard in a dim, bluish hue. She could see the figure better. The thing was aimlessly throwing its arms against the wall and door of the house Princess was on the second floor of, the creature's movements primitive. More tears as the girl held back another of her mind's attempts to further unfold the mysteries of the day's earlier events. Tired, hungry; a sobering sadness ensued. She threw herself on the queen-sized mattress in the room and buried her face in a pillow on her stomach. For hours she cried until the banging of the creature subsided and a calm quiet settled in, finally whisking the mentally and physically drained girl to sleep.
