The cost will be roughly $100, but we'll need to use Server Upgrade funds to get it. We've had a total of 8 power outages since February. Longest one lasted about 2 hours. Each time managed to corrupt/rollback server data. It's a pretty important piece of hardware for continuity of operations. If the server dies because of a power surge or goes down due to a power outage and corrupts critical system files we could experience potential down times of one to several days till replacement hardware or operating system is restored. I would like to prevent this and I think this is a critical investment for prolonging the life of the server. www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=Homepage_SS-_-P3_42-102-070-_-07142015www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102070

I vote yes - the UPS will be good now, and will continue to be useful when the server is upgraded.

I totally agree! This'll keep us stable, and I'm all about stability.

$100 ain't a bad investment for power failure protection. Were all the power failures due to weather-related incidents?

Not all was weather-related. Price is $109 for the UPS... Problem is shipping address on my PayPal is wrong and I have to go through the new address verification process which takes a few days. ughhhh

If not always weather, what else transpired for your server to go down? Just curious. Anywho, thanks for everything!

Random power surges or line tests. One of them was because I have a faulty outlet in the other room and if It was wiggled just right the power would go out...

I'm guessing the power drain from a server on the UPS would be such that we aren't looking at continued operations during a power outage. Is it possible to set up the system so that whenever the UPS is activated it triggers a save and safe server shutdown?

Had to unfortunately pass on the UPS this time. But depending on the software involved with the UPS would depend on whether we could perform the operation. It's a problem since there's no easy way to perform a safe shutdown without the quit command being manually input into the console.

If I knew what the server is running on [windows or what linux distro] I could throw together a program that works with the UPS to preform a safe saved shut down.

Yeah thecryptek has the right idea. I know I could do it if its windows but not as sure if its Linux I'm just not as familiar with all its libraries.
