I just added a new prototype feature to the boards: the oft requested server status indicator! There's no need to refresh or change web-pages to get the new status - the sidebar will check for updates on it's own periodically.
*Note that the indicator only represents whether or not Steam can contact the game server, which doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be able to connect to or play on it, as may be the case in the event of a new mod release, DDOS attack, or other network disturbances.
Right now, it's accurate to within 120 seconds - but I'm gunning for a minute once we're sure it's functioning well. I'll also be looking to add additional data like player count, and incorporating a section for the TeamSpeak server, as well.
There's a lot of work yet to be done, and many new and corrected features coming across the forums as a whole over this next year - but I figured this was something we've been needing for a while, so I've pushed it out earlier than I was planning. As such it may still be a little buggy - please report any abnormalities you experience in this thread.
- When the light's green and the status reads "online", - you're pretty well good to go*. You can connect to the server with the IP and port it lists, or to make things even easier, just click the "Play Now" button (and accept a dialogue if it pops up), and Steam will go ahead and boot the game to a login page for the server , skipping all of the menus and server configuration (though you'll need to know your username and password).
- Red and the status "offline" means the server is unresponsive, or publicly inaccessible - this can be result of updates or routine maintenance, or something less enjoyable such as a DDOS attack, server crash, network hardware failure, or just about anything else that might make the server disappear from the internet.
- Black and the status "(unknown)" either means that the Steam API is down, or my status server blew up. Please let me know if you're experiencing this status often.
